
According to a report from market research firm Gartner, Android was the most frequently purchased smartphone operating system in the first quarter of 2012. For marketers, increased ownership of Android-powered devices, and smartphones in general, places a greater focus on mobile SEO and content that targets the on-the-go consumer. More than 56 percent of smartphones sold in the first quarter worldwide run on the Android operating system. While Google’s OS powers a multitude of handsets, Apple’s iOS runs just the iPhone, which is by far the most popular device. The iPhone accounted for 22.9 percent of smartphone sales in the first quarter.
