Mobile SEO alert: Bing to be default search engine on new Amazon tablet
Despite its efforts to show the effectiveness of it search engine, Bing has struggled to resonate with consumers and SEO marketers. However, Amazon provided the company with a boost by making Bing the default search engine on the latest series of Kindle tablets, Ubergizmo reported last week. The first Amazon Kindle Fire boasted Google as its primary search engine. However, Silk, Amazon’s browser designed specifically for its Kindle, will default to Bing on the new tablets. Interestingly, Kindles run on a customized version of Android, Google’s mobile operating system, so this will be the first instance of an Android-powered device not primarily using Google’s services. The network is ostensibly an effort from the company to provide users opportunities to discover new interests and trends and share them on the web. Marketers might note this social network suggests Microsoft is mirroring Google’s effort to integrate a social search layer across the web, where shared content is key to online visibility. 56 percent of new smartphones are Android, boosting Google mobile search
According to a report from market research firm Gartner, Android was the most frequently purchased smartphone operating system in the first quarter of 2012. For marketers, increased ownership of Android-powered devices, and smartphones in general, places a greater focus on mobile SEO and content that targets the on-the-go consumer. More than 56 percent of smartphones sold in the first quarter worldwide run on the Android operating system. While Google’s OS powers a multitude of handsets, Apple’s iOS runs just the iPhone, which is by far the most popular device. The iPhone accounted for 22.9 percent of smartphone sales in the first quarter.
